Which is better, books or movies? I’ve always been one of those people who says books are better, hands down. I go out of my way to read books before seeing the film adaptation. There’s something about being able to create the world in your head and see it how you want to see it, rather than how a casting director or whoever decided it should be, that makes it more captivating. Books can also go into so much more detail about a character, their backstory, why they are the way they are, etc. These are the reasons I personally prefer books to movies, but I know not everyone enjoys reading!
I used to be a much more avid reader than I am now. (Actually, most of my hobbies have disappeared since I’ve had to start “adulting” and navigating the real world.) I’m definitely trying to get back into it, though. I’m a pretty quick reader, the most recent book I read was Misery by Stephen King which was a little over 400 pages if I remember correctly, and I demolished that book in three days. I’m a big King fan, and a big fan of horror in general. Misery has made its way into my favorite books already, up there with other King classics like The Shining and Carrie. I’m thinking the next Stephen King novel I read will be Gerald’s Game. I ended up seeing the movie before reading the book with that one, a friend who knew I was a fan of King’s work wanted me to watch it and I obliged.
Of course, the Harry Potter saga is among my favorites. I’m downright obsessed with the books and movies. (Have you seen my Harry Potter tattoos?…) I’ve read the series seven times from cover to cover! My favorite is The Half Blood Prince with The Prisoner of Azkaban being a close runner up. Snape was always my favorite character, so naturally the book where we get to learn more about him and his past ended up being my favorite! My least favorite has to be The Goblet of Fire, simply because the plot of the book reminds me of a sporting event and I HATE sports. I hate sports so much that I don’t even pay attention to wizarding sports. I barely know anything about Quidditch, and in fact I always get those questions wrong when I take Harry Potter trivia quizzes! All this HP talk is making me dream about the Universal theme park… I can’t wait until my next trip there!!! If you’re curious about the other visits I’ve had there, you can check out this blog post!
Another one of my favorite books is titled The Child Thief. This is a super dark and twisted adult version of Peter Pan. I read this book when I was in middle school and devoured it in just a week despite my reading pace being much slower then, and this book being almost 500 pages long. This was a chilling book. It made the fun story of Peter Pan seem like something out of your nightmares. The Child Thief is a page turner for sure. I had borrowed the book from a family friend to read it and lately I’ve been considering purchasing my own copy so that I can reread it!
Once I finish with the big move I’m planning when my current lease ends, I definitely want to pick up reading books regularly again! Being able to escape into a great novel is an awesome feeling. Becoming captivated by a story is much easier for me than watching a movie or a show. I’ve always been incredibly picky about the digital media I’ll watch. I even prefer actual books rather than a virtual book on my phone or a Kindle. That’s actually part of the reason I want to wait to pick up reading regularly again; I want to purchase physical books but I don’t want to have to move across the country with a bunch of books!!! Do you like to read? If so, what are some of your favorite books or novels?
